The Body Language of Facial Expressions
We begin learning early on in our lives about body language facial expressions. "A key task of social life is understandingthe motivational and affective states of others, and cues tothose states can often be gleaned from facial expressions (Fridlund 1992)". The entire attachment process which happens between moms and dads and newborns takes place through body language, since the infants, unless... (posted by Michael 1 year 254 days ago.)

Non Verbal Body Language
Non verbal body language is about 90% of our communication as human beings. We communicate a lot of information about our inner feeling states which can amplify our verbal communication or even contradict our verbal communication, and there has been a lot written about how to read body language and how to use it to establish whether an individual is telling the truth or not in an interrogation for, example, or in a relationship.... What Do Domestic Violence Counselors Do?
I have been working as a domestic violence counselor educator in Illinois for most of the last 20 years, with court ordered clients, as there are very few volunteers. My work in the field began as counties in Illinois began to implement a State of Illinois protocol which was heavily influenced by the Minnesota Model of prosecution and education of court ordered perpatrators. Perhaps the first thing to know is that... (posted by Michael 1 year 305 days ago.)

A Model for Therapeutic Counseling
When I think of how I want clients to leave their first therapeutic counseling session with me, I want them to feel more hopeful and a bit of excitement. I almost always start a therapeutic counseling session with a question like this one, "What has changed since your call to schedule?" because change actually begins before that, when the contemplation begins. I want to assure clients that they are not "crazy" and that... (posted by Michael 1 year 318 days ago.)

Listening Communication?
How can listening be part of communication? Isn't communication about speaking your message? If no one hears your message, has communication occurred? Actually, if no one listens to your message, no communication has happened. I teach my clients over and over again in my domestic violence education program that listening is a skill with discreet steps that can be learned and if you learn those steps, you will reap huge benefits... Infatuation vs Love
Infatuation vs love? Understanding the neurology of infatuation using Helen Fisher's research might just offer some choices in the course of a potentially life changing experience. And looking at recent research about love by Robert Epstein,Ph.D. and John Gottman,Ph.D., I think there is a great deal of hope for couples to deepen and enrich their experience of love. Maybe infatuation is brain based, and love is heart... (posted by Michael 2 years 20 days ago.)
